"Mantle & Maris '61 Dumont"
Media: if radio helped to spread baseball in the 20's, then television launched sports in the 50's. For the first time we could see near mythical figures moving around in our homes. This is a 1961 Dumont model television that has been cut down to five inches deep; the painting is mounted inside the TV and lit from the bottom. What better image for a 1961 set than Maris on-deck waiting for Mantle to hit? It's as if he is waiting for Mantle to step from the spotlight and before the end of the season, shine a blinding light on Maris. This was the first in a series of works inside various TV sets.
